How the Mind Processes Meaning in Learning
We assume that when we explain something clearly, learners understand it. But do they? Words themselves do not carry meaning—our minds do. When learners lack an experiential reference point, they may grasp the words but completely misinterpret the concept, thinking they understand when they don’t. This is the most fundamental failure in all of teaching and learning.
This session explores how the mind processes meaning, how symbols like language shape our understanding, and why abstract explanations so often fail. You’ll see firsthand why definitions, descriptions, and verbal explanations don’t work unless learners already have a tangible, real-world foundation to anchor them. More importantly, we’ll discuss the implications for teaching and training, including why experiential learning should always come before explanation. This is a deep dive into learning science that will fundamentally change how you think about communication, instruction, and knowledge transfer.
