Understanding Motivation Psychology
Why do some learners engage deeply while others disengage? Motivation is not just about willpower or enthusiasm—it’s a complex psychological process shaped by needs, rewards, expectations, and emotions. This session explores the cognitive and emotional drivers of motivation, revealing how attention, effort, and persistence are influenced by the way learning experiences are structured.
We’ll examine key psychological theories—including Self-Determination Theory, Expectancy-Value Theory, and the role of dopamine in learning—to understand why people commit to learning, what makes them disengage, and how motivation can be sustained over time. While this session is not focused on instructional techniques, it will provide a deep understanding of the mechanisms that drive or hinder motivation in any learning environment. Whether you develop training programs or lead teams, this session will give you a science-backed perspective on how motivation works—and why it matters for learning.
Your people will learn how to:
- Explain the psychological mechanisms of motivation, including how cognitive and emotional factors drive or hinder learning.
- Describe key motivation theories, such as Self-Determination Theory and Expectancy-Value Theory, and their implications for engagement and effort.
- Analyze the role of dopamine and reward processing in learning, understanding how motivation is biologically reinforced.
- Recognize how autonomy, competence, and relatedness influence motivation, shaping how learners commit to or disengage from a task.
- Differentiate between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and how each impacts long-term learning and retention.
- Identify cognitive and environmental factors that sustain or weaken motivation, providing insight into why learners persist or give up.
